Mother & Son: Two Generations of Trenton Artists
Peggy Peplow Gummere (1912 - 1992) lived in Trenton her whole life until retiring to Maine in 1989. In the 1930s she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she won the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship. She was well-known around Central Jersey for her portraits of civic, business, and religious leaders, and for her pen-and-ink drawings. In the 1970s she produced the "Trenton Suite," a collection of limited edition prints of her drawings of Trenton landmarks, and created the "Patriots Bowl" for the Lenox Company at the time of the Bicentennial. Peggy was committed to supporting the Trenton community, and shared her talents with many local organizations, including the Trenton Free Public Library, the Mount Carmel Guild, and the Trenton Symphony Orchestra.

Peggy's son John Gummere (b. 1955) grew up here and lived in Philadelphia for decades until returning to the area in 2016; he and his wife Sue live in Morrisville, PA. John studied architecture at Columbia University and later returned to school in the Four-Year Certificate Program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), where he graduated in 1996. His paintings revolve around landscapes, cityscapes, and interior compositions, a number of which feature Trenton scenes. He teaches workshops for the Princeton Adult School and Artworks Trenton, and volunteers for Urban Promise Trenton. He shows work at the Euphemia Gallery in Spring Lake, NJ, and in juried shows both locally and around the country. He recently exhibited in a solo show at the Boston Street Gallery in Philadelphia.
